To everything, turn, turn, turn

One of the my favourite songs from the 1960′s is Turn, Turn, Turn. It was written by Peter Seeger and became an international hit when it was covered byAmerican folk-rock group The Byrds.

The lyrics are taken from the third chapter of the book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament attributed to King Solomon. The song got me interested in reading this book of wisdom.

Pete Seeger used the King James translation and put the words to music. All the lyrics are from Ecclesiastes with one addition “a time for peace, I swear it’s not too late.”  The song was often used as a plea for world peace implying that the “time for war” is now past.

The song has been covered by many artists and I have included my favourites in this article. First of all, here is the version by The Byrds as used in the film Forrest Gump.

Lyrics

To everything, turn, turn, turn
There is a season, turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together

A time of love, a time of hate
A time of war, a time of peace
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time of love, a time of hate
A time of peace, I swear it’s not too late

Judy Collins

Here is a version by Judy Collins accompanying herself on guitar:

The Seekers

The first version I heard of the song was by the Australian folk group The Seekers led by Judith Durham.  This video was filmed at Chateau Yaldara vineyard in South Australia.

Maybe you would like to read about the book of Ecclesiastes or jump straight to chapter 3.
