Get Together – The Youngbloods

Get TogetherI first heard “Get Together”  sung by The Youngbloods  in 1969 and was attracted to the twangy guitar sound and folk style.   A lot of popular music in the late 1960’s promoted “Peace and Love” – it was the time of the Hippie movement and the Woodstock music festival in 1969.

The song was released in 1967 although it had been recorded previously by other singers such as The Kingston Trio and Judy Collins.

In this article I share the lyrics and a video of the song.

The Wikipedia article says “the song is an appeal for peace and brotherhood, presenting the polarity of love versus fear, and the choice to be made between them. It is best remembered for the impassioned plea in the lines of its refrain, which is repeated several times in succession to bring the song to its conclusion.”

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Here is the song with images of the 1960’s, folowed by the lyrics.

Love is but a song to sing
Fear’s the way we die
You can make the mountains ring
Or make the angels cry
Though the bird is on the wing
And you may not know why

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Some may come and some may go
We shall surely pass
When the one that left us here
Returns for us at last
We are but a moment’s sunlight
Fading in the grass

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

If you hear the song I sing
You will understand (listen!)
You hold the key to love and fear
All in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both
It’s there at your command

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Come on people now
Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now

Right now
Right now

Woodstock

Here is some film from Woodstock with the song used as the soundtrack.

  1. Hey Charles, I wonder what does the symbol which look like the logo of Mercedes-*Benz means?* * * *It kept appearing at the MTV and also on your article diagram. * Sent from my iPhone

  2. The symbol you referred to the Peace symbol. It was originally designed for the British nuclear disarmament movement by Gerald Holtom in 1958 and is made of the semaphore signals for N and D which stand for Nuclear Disarmament. Since then it has become adopted as the symbol for peace. I recently read a “biography” book about the symbol – most interesting!

Have a look at the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peace_symbol
