The piano music of George Winston

winston1I am a great fan of George Winston and his “New Age” style piano compositions. Recently I heard a piece titled Jesus, Jesus Rest Your Head from his December album (released in 1982).  The tune is both haunting and  beautiful. I searched for the sheet music so I could play it.

It turns out that the song is a Christmas carol collected in the 1930s by John Jacob Giles in the Appalachian mountains of America.  Giles was an American composer, singer, and collector of traditional ballads and died in 1980 at the age of 88.

Here is a YouTube clip of George playing this piece.

Sheet Music

I found a piano solo version online which I am using for my playing:  Jesus Jesus Rest Your Head – piano music (2 pages PDF).  I researched the other carols collected by Giles and found  the music of 10 Christmas Carols From The Southern Appalachian Mountains on Sheet Music Plus. This is a printed book.

George Winston has a book of piano music, but unfortunately it does not contain this carol.
