Green tea (matcha 抹茶 ) cake recipe

Here is a recipe for a very quick and easy green tea cake. The original recipe just used cinnamon and sugar as a topping.

  • 60 g butter
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  • 1 cup self-raising flour
  • 2 teaspoons matcha powder added to flour
  • 80 ml  ( 1/3 cup) milk

Turn oven on to 190 degrees C.

Soften butter by keeping at room temperature or use microwave oven.

Mix the butter, sugar, egg and vanilla essence until light and creamy.

Stir in sifted flour and milk, and beat lightly until smooth.

Line a 20 cm square tin with baking paper.

Spread mixture into a cake tin and bake for 18 – 20 minutes.

Allow cake to cool then remove from tin.

Put the cake onto a wire rack.

I made this cake for my ESL class and gave a copy of the recipe to learn new words. Cooking verbs:  Softem, Mix, Stir, Line, Spread …..
